An Active, Growing Parish
The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Seinäjoki was established in 1863. At that time there were about 1500 parishioners in Seinäjoki. Today our active community numbers approximately 33,000 members. Seinäjoki parish also comprises the chapel parish of Peräseinäjoki. In 2009, the parishes of Nurmo and Ylistaro are going to be incorporated into Seinäjoki Evangelical Lutheran parish.
The first parish council was elected in 1927. The number of the council members was then 27, now it is 33.
Since 2002, the vicar of the parish of Seinäjoki has been Rev. Tapio Luoma, Th. D. The main church of the parish, Lakeuden Risti, designed by Alvar Aalto was completed in 1960. There are churches in Törnävä and Peräseinäjoki too.
In addition to 145 employees, there are as many as 1500 volunteers working together to arrange different kinds of events and activities. Every week, thousands of people attend these activities.
Jesus Christ is the core of the Christian faith. When he sent his disciples into the world he said: ”Therefore go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:18-20). |
